In some areas of everyday life clothing is very important. In schools and businesses many have to stick to set uniforms, or comply to set dress codes. The same applies to some clubs, societies and hotels. Fashion often dictates a large amount of what is worn in any given season, and keeping up with the latest trends can seem essential to some. There is no denying, even for those who do not follow popular fashion trends, that clothing can give certain messages about an individual. Sports all tend to have certain items of clothing associated with them. Sometimes they will be based primarily on appearance, but this is not usually the case. The majority of sportswear is based mainly on practicality, and cricket clothing is no exception. Safety is very important to any sort of sport, and sometimes items of clothing used look the way they do because they add protection. Example of this are widely used shin pads, helmets and shoes/boots with additional ankle support. The traditional items of clothing seen worn by cricketers are all specially made to work with the game, and the various positions, as some players need more protection than others. At vast knowledge of cricket clothing is not required to enjoy the game as a spectator, but it is important that those who wish to play know why they are wearing what they are wearing!
