Rugby Clothing for Junior Players - 09/12/2009

With rugby being quite a rough game, it is very important that players are correctly kitted out from the start. The importance of safety must be impressed upon junior players from their very first training session, as well as the correct rugby clothing and gear to enforce this. Rugby clothing for junior players is widely available from a variety of sportswear manufacturers and retailers, as well as the protective accessories that go with the game. It is very important that the parents or those responsible for juniors ensure that the clothing they are wearing is to standard and hard wearing to withstand the rigours of playing a contact sport, as well as any training clothes they may need. A rugby kit consists of a top, shorts, boots with spikes, a helmet and any protective gear that is needed, such as a helmet, shoulder pads and shin pads. Some people also choose to wear items such as baselayers, mouth guards and forearm supports as extra protection, which is well advised during a match. All of the above items are available in junior sizes and from well known manufacturers such as Adidas and Canterbury.
Junior rugby tops such as t shirts and polo shirts are lightweight and tend to have double stitched hems and seams to ensure they are hardwearing. It is possible to get them in up to 20 different colours and they are usually suitable for embroidery and printing of team logos, names etc if desired. It is also possible to get tops specifically for training purposes ' these are often called training bibs and are designed in a mesh style to withstand any hard knocks. Well known manufacturers of rugby tops and training bins include Gilbert and Puma. Rugby shorts have to be light to wear and, once again, hard wearing. A lot are made from 100% cotton to ensure they are not heavy on the player. Many have an elasticated waist and pull cord design at the front, which means they are loose and easy to put on and take off quickly. Training shorts are available; often called warm up shorts, they ensure players' muscles are kept warm and supple during practice. Perhaps one of the most important areas of rugby clothing are the boots worn by players. Regardless of whether they are worn for training or during a real game, they must provide support for the foot and ankle as well as being strong enough to cope with the often tough conditions of the field. Supplied with spikes or studs on the soles, these are to ensure the players have optimum grip on the pitch and do not fall over. Junior rugby boots can be bought from manufacturers such as Mizuno and Gilbert.
Rugby helmets or head guards are designed to protect the head from injury, such as during a scrum or if hit by a ball. These are also an essential part of rugby clothing which needs to be taken into account by those looking to play the sport, and should fit snugly to the player's head without being too tight. Often made from foam, they are extremely durable and designed to cope with a fair amount of force. If you have a junior player looking to take up rugby, be sure that you buy them the correct rugby clothing to withstand the trials and pressures of the game; rugby can be quite a harsh sport and it is essential that players are kitted out suitably before being allowed to play. If in doubt, be sure to ask the coach what you need to buy.
