Superb Socks! - 11/12/2009

All athletes know the importance of using good equipment when they train, and the right clothes can affect standards and performance. For those who play rugby, socks in particular can be one of the most important aspects of any kit. They must keep feet comfortable and dry, and must allow the skin to breathe and flex easily whilst still being supportive and secure. Failure to meet these standards can cause irritation, slipping and ailments such as blisters, infections, and even mechanical damage to the pads of the feet or heels. When searching for new rugby socks either as an individual of for a team as a group, it is important to consider the technical specifications of various options. Many socks will offer a cushioned foot, to provide extra protection for the heel and ball of the foot. These can provide comfort and stability within the sock, particularly once any boots are worn also. Rugby socks will also be available in a range of breathable fabrics, for added comfort during use. There are a few different types of fabric that will offer a breathable quality, but specifically designed man-made fibres are preferable. In terms of ‘breathability', rugby socks should be able to deal with sweat and moisture generated from the feet whilst still allowing air to pass through the fabric. Cotton fibres retain three times as much moisture as acrylic fibres, and around fourteen times as much as specially designed man-made fibres. Therefore, choosing these specifically designed fabrics will help to avoid a build up of moist
It is also important to consider the shape and fit of any sock. When searching for new rugby socks, it may be easy to get a cheaper option online. However, this does eliminate the possibility of trying any new socks on, with the boots that they will be worn with. This is ideal to get the best fit, and it may be more suitable to visit a specialist sports shop where trying items on will be easier. Alternatively, for those who are purchasing a large number of socks for an entire team, it may be simpler and cheaper to bulk buy from a dedicated sports website. If this is the case every effort should be made to purchase rugby socks made from good quality fibres, which will not retain water or wrinkle when worn during sport. Buying online can also be a good choice if a particular colour scheme is desired. Most clubs will have a themed kit, and the range of different colours combinations available online is much greater than that of any local store. It may also be cheaper to buy colour themed socks in bulk, making any team look uniformed and professional.
